5 common furniture layout mistakes and how to avoid them

The most common mistakes: pushing all furniture against the walls, ignoring walking paths, and choosing pieces too big for the room.
The first mistake is buying furniture before measuring the room. Draw a simple plan with dimensions and place the pieces on it before you buy. The second is pushing everything against the walls; in larger rooms, floating the sofa slightly away from the wall feels organized and creates a more intimate seating area.
The third is ignoring walking paths: leave at least about 80 cm for main walkways and a comfortable gap between the sofa and the coffee table. The fourth is choosing pieces that are too big or too small for the space, which upsets the visual balance.
The fifth is neglecting the focal point of the room, such as a window, a TV or a feature artwork. Decide on that point first, then arrange the furniture around it so that daily use stays comfortable and practical.
