How to choose your home colors to suit the light and the space

Light colors open up small spaces, and warm shades give living rooms a feeling of intimacy. Test a color before you commit to it.
A color that looks perfect in the shop can change a lot inside your home, because natural light shifts through the day and depends on the direction of your windows. North-facing rooms tend to have cooler light and need warm shades to balance it, while sunny rooms can take calmer, lighter tones.
Try the color on a generous patch of the actual wall and look at it in the morning, at noon, in the evening and under artificial light before deciding. Light walls reflect light and make small rooms feel larger, while darker shades add depth and warmth in large rooms or on a feature wall.
To keep the home harmonious, pick a calm base color for connected spaces, then add color through cushions, curtains and accessories that are easy to change later. If you are unsure, ask a designer to suggest a palette that suits your space and furniture.
